Science, Sleepless Nights, and Strength: Meet the Mothers Powering Innovation
Ir. Dr. Nor Ilia Anisa binti Aris is a Professional Engineer and science bridge communicator at Leave A Nest Malaysia. With a background in chemical engineering and years of experience in research, industry and academia, she now dedicates herself to nurturing young talent through science and education initiatives. When asked to describe her day in one word, she replied, “Thankful”, appreciating every opportunity to grow, contribute and be surrounded by people she values. Ilia is also a mother of two sons, aged 13 and 9. Her journey as a researcher and parent began simultaneously when she pursued her PhD while raising a toddler. She completed her doctorate five years later and has since balanced her evolving career while raising her children with care and intention.
Coming from a family with limited exposure to science and technology, Ilia pursued engineering with the hope of creating a better future for herself and her loved ones. Today, she carries that belief forward by instilling the same values in her children. “I encourage my boys to focus on core subjects like mathematics and science. These build critical thinking, which is crucial for today’s workforce,” she shared.
Ilia admits she holds herself to high standards in both professional and personal roles. What helps, she says, is learning when and how to shift between them. “At work, I focus on being professional and efficient. At home, I aim to be emotionally present,” she said. She recalled a moment during her PhD journey when a male colleague offered her space to manage her responsibilities as a breastfeeding mother. That experience showed her how empathy and support can make a real difference.
To women navigating similar paths, she encourages building a strong support network and maintaining a positive inner voice. “Let yourself feel fully, even on hard days. Crying is not a weakness. It helps you release what you carry,” she said. Her personal mantra, everything happens for a reason, offers strength in difficult moments. For women who feel they are falling short in any of their roles, Ilia offers reassurance. “Every woman is a superwoman in her own way. The effort and love you give, even when unseen, matter more than you think.”
Ilia’s story is one of resilience, purpose, and quiet determination. She reminds us that thriving in STEM and in life is not about perfection but about staying grounded, supported, and true to your path.
